I am a writer. Some days I am more confident of this fact. Today I am writing this piece and eventually someone will read my work. I am a writer today. According to one of my favorite bloggers, Jeff Goins, if a person is truly a writer- she must write every day with purpose and focus. Steven Pressfield calls it turning pro. Years ago, I read that Jerry Seinfeld wrote new material every single day. He put an X on the calendar each day he wrote. The calendar became a challenge to continue writing each day. Few excuses were more powerful than the disappointment of breaking the chain.
So today is the first X on my blog calendar. My goal is to share my process. My process of writing; my process of creating art; my process of living. Creating a blog has been on my to-do list for years now. Austin Kleon's book Show Your Work finally pushed me over the edge. I bought it a few days ago and have devoured the first half. Thank you, Austin, for your wisdom, your inspiration, and most of all... thanks for the push! "Come to the edge," he said.
They said, "We are afraid." "Come to the edge," he said. They came. He pushed them and they flew! -Guillaume Apollinaire |
